Ramblers Way controls its product from the sheep farm to you.
We have principles of sustainability that we require in our partners from the sheep ranch to the textile manufacturing, sewing, dyeing, and laundering.
Our sustainability program consists of:
Transparency of the product process: We ask for full disclosure of how a process is done and what other materials may be used.
We know that sheep raising requires an understanding of what the land can absorb for sheep maintenance and so rotation grazing is used.
Scouring of the wool requires effective and biodegradable detergents which must be processed adequately in their waste treatment.
Dyeing with natural dyes can be done with virtually all of the dye being absorbed into the fabric.
Standards of environmental sustainability need to be agreed upon with our partners, who are themselves very environmentally conscious.
Renewable materials, recycled packaging, effective waste water treatment, conversion to more sustainable energy, and elimination of unneeded carbon expenditures guide us in our agreements with partners. Our offices, home, and farm operate with these standards.
Our farms in Maine are certified organic, our home, office building, and farm operate on geothermal heating system backed up by solar energy panels throughout the rooftops of these buildings.
Renovations of old buildings have made use of recycled materials, gaining us awards like LEEDS, Gold certification and Maine Historical Society preservation award.
Monitoring of our carbon emissions will be done with Clean Air, Cool Planet. They will assess, measure, and recommend ways to improve our impact on the environment.
Measuring the carbon footprint will be done by an agreement with Clean Air, Cool Planet, and they will recommend ways to reduce impact and replenish the environment with clean air credits.
Partnering together to achieve a low environmental impact is the only way we will turn around the deterioration of our impact on the world’s resources.
Our suppliers know our lifetime commitment to environmental sustainability from our years at Tom’s of Maine to today and they want to support our environmental ethics with practices that are aligned and with suggestions of their own.
