Long before synthetic fibers or performance materials existed, wool was the standard for uniforms, blankets, and outerwear across every branch of the U.S. military. From the battlefields of the Revolutionary War to the decks of Navy ships and the trenches of Europe, wool proved itself time and again being durable, breathable, and dependable in all conditions.

There’s a reason soldiers and sailors relied on it for centuries. Wool has an unmatched ability to insulate even when wet, to wick away moisture, and to stand up to hard wear, all without losing its shape or strength. In an era when military success depended as much on resilience as on firepower, wool became part of the American arsenal.

A History Woven in Wool

The relationship between wool and the U.S. military dates back to the very beginning.
During the Revolutionary War, soldiers often wore homespun wool coats and blankets crafted by families and small communities across the colonies. The fiber symbolized more than warmth. It represented self-reliance and unity, the same principles that defined America’s earliest years.

By the Civil War, wool production had become a national effort. Mills in New England, including many not far from where Ramblers Way calls home, produced thousands of yards of wool fabric for Union uniforms. In fact, wool was so essential to the war effort that it became a strategic resource, regulated and protected to ensure troops were supplied through every season.

In World War I and World War II, wool once again took its place at the front lines. Soldiers’ uniforms, naval peacoats, flight jackets, and blankets were all made from American wool. The fiber’s natural warmth and durability offered unmatched performance in freezing trenches, high altitudes, and across every ocean.

Even today, the U.S. military continues to incorporate wool into its uniform systems for its comfort, breathability, and sustainability.

Wool has quietly stood beside America’s servicemen and women for generations: a natural armor, a reminder of home, and a symbol of craftsmanship that endures.

As someone who proudly served on Active Duty in the United States Navy, Veterans Day holds deep personal meaning. It’s a day to honor not only those who wore the uniform before us, but those who continue to serve with quiet strength and dedication as Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, and Airmen who stand watch, answer the call, and uphold the ideals that define this country.

Service is about more than duty. It’s about community, sacrifice, and trust. It’s about knowing that what you do matters, even when no one is watching. Those lessons stay with you long after your time in uniform ends, and they shape how you see the world, how you lead, and how you create.

To my fellow veterans: thank you. Your courage, commitment, and resilience continue to inspire not just those who serve, but all of us who strive to do things the right way.
