Base Layers

A base layer has one job: to manage the difference between the temperature outside and the temperature of your body, without you noticing it is there.

Ours are 135 gsm. The industry calls 150 lightweight, so these sit below the lightest weight most brands sell, and they get there with 100% merino wool rather than by blending in synthetics.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. To reach a light fabric, most brands mix in polyester or nylon, because it is cheaper and easier to knit. Read the label on any lightweight wool shirt you own and you will usually find it. One well-known American merino brand sells a lightweight tee that is 38 percent wool.

We do not blend. No polyester, no nylon, no modal.

The weight is the whole point. At 135 gsm these disappear under a shirt, a sweater or a shell, and they still work in July, which a heavier base layer does not. Merino handles the swing in both directions, holding warmth in cold air and moving heat away from an overheated room. It resists odor well enough to wear several days between washes.

Every piece here is spun to 19.5 micron, comfortably below the roughly 22 micron point where most people begin to feel prickle. The fabric is knit in the Carolinas. The garments are cut and sewn in New England.
