Merino Wool vs Synthetic Base Layers
Synthetics dry faster and cost less. Merino resists odor, works across a wider temperature range, and does not shed plastic. For most people, most of the time, that trade favors wool.

Where synthetic genuinely wins
If you are moving hard and sweating heavily and need a layer dry again in an hour, synthetic does that better. If the garment will take repeated abrasion, from a pack, a harness or a saddle, synthetic lasts longer. If price is the deciding factor, synthetic is cheaper, and a cheap synthetic base layer is better than no base layer.
Where merino wins
Everywhere the garment has to be lived in rather than performed in. Multi-day trips, travel, work, daily wear. The odor difference is not marginal, and it is the reason one merino shirt can replace several synthetic ones on a packing list. Merino also covers a wider temperature range, which matters more in ordinary life than peak drying speed does.
The blends in between
Many garments sold as merino are blends, commonly 80 to 90 percent wool with nylon or polyester for durability, and sometimes far less wool than that. Blending is a legitimate engineering choice that buys abrasion resistance and faster drying. It also reduces odor resistance and biodegradability, and it means the garment sheds plastic when washed.
What is worth noticing is how rarely the ratio appears in the marketing. It is always on the label. It is often 60 percent synthetic.
How to choose
Pick synthetic for short, high-output, high-abrasion activity where drying speed decides. Pick merino for anything measured in days rather than hours, and for anything you will wear among other people.
Where we stand
Our next-to-skin line is 100% merino, with no polyester, nylon or modal, at 19.5 micron and 135 gsm. Reaching a light fabric weight without synthetics is harder and more expensive, and it is the trade we chose.
